LONDON — The free London-attraction landscape has, on every available reading, shifted slightly across the past eighteen months. The major national museums remain free, which is the headline good news for tourists. Several smaller attractions have quietly started charging admission or have substantively raised their suggested-donation requirements. Here is the practical 2026 picture. By Fiona MacLeod.

What Stayed Free

The British Museum, the National Gallery, the Tate Britain, the Tate Modern, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Science Museum, the Natural History Museum, the National Maritime Museum, and the Museum of London Docklands all remain free of charge for general admission. The BBC covered the 2024 confirmation that this would continue.

What Has Changed

Several smaller venues have quietly added admission fees or substantially increased suggested-donation requirements across 2025. The Wallace Collection retains free admission but has increased its event-ticket prices substantively. The Sir John Soane Museum requires advance booking with a small per-visit donation. The Geffrye Museum of the Home (in Hoxton) charges a small admission fee. The cumulative pressure of food and energy inflation on cultural-venue operating costs is the underlying mechanism.

The big museums remain the substantive answer. Time Out London maintains the comprehensive free-attractions list. Read more at my author page.
