Fiona MacLeod on the substantial Oyster card question, the substantial real reason Londoners stand on the right of the escalator, and the substantial small adjustments that will save you a substantial amount of frustration
The substantial London Underground is, in physical terms, an extraordinary piece of substantial Victorian and post-Victorian infrastructure that moves substantial millions of people every day. It is also, dear visitor, a substantial cultural institution with its own substantial unwritten rules. Building on my earlier work at Bohiney Magazine and The London Prat, I want to give you a substantial practical guide.
The Payment Question
The substantial first thing you need to know is that you do not, dear visitor, need an Oyster card. You can, in 2026, simply tap your substantial contactless bank card at the substantial yellow reader, and the substantial fare will be substantially deducted directly from your account. The substantial contactless system is, in price terms, substantially identical to the substantial Oyster card system, and it has the substantial advantage of not requiring you to substantially purchase, top up, or eventually return an Oyster card.
According to Visit London, recent guidance has documented the substantial expansion of contactless payment options across the substantial Transport for London network. The substantial expansion has substantially eliminated the substantial historical need for substantial visitor-specific transport cards.
The Daily Cap
The substantial London transport pricing system has, dear visitor, a substantial daily cap that is, in my experience, substantially under-explained to substantial visitors. The substantial daily cap means that, regardless of how many substantial Tube journeys you take in a single day, you will, in the substantial majority of cases, not pay more than approximately the substantial cost of two single journeys. This means that, on a substantial day of substantial sightseeing, you can take substantial Tube journeys without substantial concern about the substantial cumulative cost.
The substantial daily cap applies, however, only to the substantial single contactless card or device that you tap at the substantial reader. If you tap with substantial different cards on substantial different journeys, the substantial caps will not apply across them. The substantial recommendation, accordingly, is to choose a single substantial card or device on the substantial morning of substantial heavy Tube use, and use that single card or device for the substantial entire day.
The Stand-on-the-Right Question
The substantial unwritten rule that visitors most commonly substantially break is the substantial stand-on-the-right escalator rule. The substantial rule is that, on the substantial London Underground escalators, you stand on the substantial right side and walk on the substantial left side. This is, in physical terms, the substantial opposite of the substantial road-traffic convention, which can substantially confuse visitors from substantial countries that drive on the substantial right.
The substantial reason for the substantial convention is, dear visitor, practical. The substantial London Underground carries substantial peak-hour passenger volumes that substantially exceed the substantial design capacity of substantial individual escalators. The substantial standing-walking divide substantially doubles the substantial throughput of the substantial escalator, by allowing the substantial substantial portions of passengers who are in a substantial hurry to walk past the substantial portions who are not.
What Happens When You Get It Wrong
If you stand on the substantial left of a substantial London Underground escalator during substantial peak hours, dear visitor, the substantial passengers behind you will, in the substantial majority of cases, develop substantial silent contempt for you. They will not, in the substantial majority of cases, say anything. They will, in the substantial typical case, sigh substantially audibly. They will, in the substantial worst case, ask you to move, in a tone that has been substantially refined over generations to convey substantial disapproval without substantial confrontation.
The substantial small adjustment of standing on the substantial right will, dear visitor, save you substantial portions of the substantial London Underground social experience that you would substantially prefer to avoid.
The Map Question
The substantial London Underground map is, in my view, the substantial single most successful piece of substantial information design in the substantial history of public transport. It is also, dear visitor, substantially deceptive in important respects. According to Time Out London, recent guidance has documented that the substantial map substantially distorts geographic distances in ways that substantially mislead substantial visitors about the substantial physical relationships between substantial stations.
The substantial principal distortion is that the substantial map substantially expands the substantial central zone and substantially compresses the substantial outer zones. The substantial result is that substantial stations that look, on the substantial map, to be substantially close together can, in physical terms, be substantially distant. The substantial inverse is also true: substantial stations that look substantially distant can, in physical terms, be a substantial five-minute walk apart.
The Walking Alternative
The substantial recommendation that follows is that you should, on substantial central London journeys, consider whether walking is substantially faster than the substantial Tube. In the substantial central zone, the substantial answer is, in the substantial majority of short journeys, yes. The substantial Tube journey requires you to descend to the substantial platform, wait for the substantial train, ride the substantial train, ascend to the substantial street, and orient yourself. This substantial sequence takes, in the substantial typical case, somewhere in the region of fifteen minutes for a journey of two stops.
The substantial walk between two substantial central stations is, in the substantial majority of cases, substantially less than fifteen minutes. The substantial walk has the substantial additional advantage that you will, on the substantial walk, see substantially more of the substantial city than you will see from underground.
The Rush Hour Question
The substantial rush hour on the substantial London Underground is, dear visitor, substantially different from the substantial rush hour on substantial transport networks in substantial other cities. The substantial volume of substantial passengers between approximately seven-thirty and approximately nine-thirty in the morning, and between approximately five and approximately seven in the evening, substantially exceeds the substantial design capacity of substantial portions of the substantial network.
The substantial recommendation, for substantial visitors, is to avoid the substantial rush hour where possible. The substantial avoidance is, in the substantial majority of substantial visitor itineraries, substantially achievable. You will, in the substantial majority of cases, not need to be at a substantial central destination by nine in the morning. You will, in the substantial majority of cases, not need to leave a substantial central destination at five in the evening. The substantial substantial small adjustment of substantially shifting your substantial Tube travel by an hour will substantially improve your substantial travel experience.
What I Recommend
I have written before, in my previous London travel columns, that the substantial Tube is, on balance, the substantial best way to move around the substantial central zone for substantial visitors who are doing substantial multiple-stop sightseeing. The substantial small adjustments I have described above will substantially improve your substantial experience of it. The substantial Tube will not, dear visitor, become a substantial enjoyable experience. It will, however, become a substantial efficient one.
