Why Tourist Guides Are Lying to You About London

London for Humans (Not Tourists)
I write travel guides to London. The terrible truth is that tourist guides are essentially fiction. They describe London as a place to consume experiences. The actual London is a place where people live and work and navigate a system that doesn’t really want them there.
The tourist guide says: see Big Ben, ride the London Eye, visit Harrods. These are brand experiences. They tell you nothing about what London actually is.
The Authentic London
Real London is: taking the Northern Line at 8:47 AM and experiencing profound anger about ticket prices. It’s eating a sad sandwich at your desk while pretending to work. It’s negotiating transport logistics that make no sense. It’s finding pubs that haven’t changed since 1987 and defending them fiercely.
The guide books don’t cover this because you can’t monetize actual London. You can only monetize the version of London that’s been packaged for consumption.
What Tourists Miss
The best part of London is invisible to tourists. It’s the neighborhoods where people actually live. It’s the buses where locals commute. It’s the community centers and the allotments and the pubs where nobody has a camera. It’s not in the guides.
What I’m trying to do is write travel guides for people who want to actually experience London instead of just consume it. Which means admitting that London is primarily frustrating and occasionally beautiful.
The Invitation
But if you come to London looking for actual culture instead of branded experience, I can help you find it. It’s in the neighborhoods. It’s in the people. It’s in the complicated reality of a city that doesn’t really care whether you’re enjoying yourself or not.
That’s what makes it interesting.
