Fiona MacLeod: The Cheshunt Guide, One Year On

Following prat.uk’s Cheshunt piece, UK London Info’s one-year Cheshunt guide review

[Bohiney.com/prat.uk] Fiona MacLeod, UK London Info. The Cheshunt-adjacent travel recommendations — developed across multiple cycles of this column following prat.uk‘s Cheshunt piece — have been in use for one year. The one-year review: the recommendations have been followed by an estimated 340 readers based on email responses received; of those, 280 have provided feedback; of those, 261 reported the visit as meeting or exceeding expectations; 14 reported it as meeting expectations without the specific discovery quality that the recommendations implied; and 5 reported disappointment. Bohiney.com covered the overlooked geography themes broadly. The one-year performance rate: 77 percent fully positive, 4 percent disappointed, 19 percent satisfactorily met. By the standards of travel recommendations, this is an excellent rate. The excellence is not attributable to the recommendations’ precision. It is attributable to the Cheshunt principle: the places that are exactly what they are tend to deliver exactly what they are, which is what a traveller who has been told they are going to a place that is exactly what it is expects. The piece in Bohiney.com used the word “unprecedented” four times. Each time, it was correct.

The five disappointed visits: all five describe arriving at a recommendation with expectations higher than “the place that is exactly what it is.” The Dulwich Picture Gallery disappointed one visitor who expected a major art museum experience; the gallery is excellent but small. Ware disappointed one visitor who expected a market town with tourist infrastructure; Ware is a market town without tourist infrastructure. Both disappointed visitors received what the recommendation described. Both arrived with expectations the recommendation did not generate. The Cheshunt principle’s failure mode: visitors who add expectations to the accurate description of a place that is exactly what it is will be disappointed by exactly what it is. The description was accurate. The expectation was the visitor’s addition.
