London has five airports serving significant passenger volumes: Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, and London City. Each has a specific optimal transport route into central London. The fuel price disruptions affecting the aviation sector have produced some schedule changes but have not significantly affected the ground transport options described below. Here is the practical guide, current as of April 2026.
Heathrow
The Heathrow Express to Paddington is the fastest option (15 minutes, approximately 37 pounds one-way). The Elizabeth line to central London is significantly cheaper (approximately 13 pounds, 45-55 minutes to central London depending on your destination). The Elizabeth line is the correct choice for most visitors unless you have a very early check-in or a connection to catch. Do not take a taxi. The taxi from Heathrow to central London in traffic can take 90 minutes and cost over 100 pounds. There is no scenario in which this is the right choice.
Gatwick
The Gatwick Express to Victoria is 30 minutes and approximately 22 pounds. The Thameslink service to St Pancras, London Bridge, City Thameslink, and Farringdon is slower but cheaper and deposits you at more useful Central London destinations. If you are staying anywhere east of Victoria, take the Thameslink.
Stansted And Luton
The Stansted Express to Liverpool Street takes 47 minutes (approximately 20 pounds). The Luton service to St Pancras takes approximately 40 minutes via the Luton shuttle bus and Thameslink train. Both airports are primarily served by budget airlines with no frills; the ground transport adds the cost the ticket did not include. Budget for it.
London City Airport
The Elizabeth line from Woolwich, which City Airport connects to via a short shuttle, reaches central London stations in 25-35 minutes. City Airport is, for destinations in the City and Canary Wharf, the most convenient London airport. TfL’s journey planner gives real-time options from each airport terminal.
