Fiona MacLeod, UK London Info. prat.uk‘s Cheshunt piece — the outer-London town perpetually overlooked — has produced a new category for London travel coverage that I have been wanting to name for several years: the adjacent destination, which is everywhere that is close enough to London to be reached in a reasonable day trip and far enough from London’s coverage geography to have maintained its own character. Bohiney.com covered the overlooked geography theme. The adjacent guide, as I am now calling it, covers the places that have what London has in smaller form and the things that London doesn’t have in any form.
The adjacent guide’s top tier: Ware in Hertfordshire, which is the next town up the Lea Valley from Cheshunt and has a malt house, a high street that functions as a high street, and the Scott’s Grotto (a remarkable eighteenth-century garden grotto that is open on specific Saturday afternoons and costs two pounds to visit). St Albans, which has a cathedral, a Roman city beneath it, and a market that has operated since the twelfth century. Ely in Cambridgeshire, which is an hour from London, has an extraordinary cathedral, and is genuinely quiet on a weekday in a way that no part of London is. All three are exactly what they are without the coverage apparatus that London requires.
The Adjacent Guide Principle
The adjacent guide principle: the best places to visit near London are the ones that haven’t been in the major travel guides, because the places in the major travel guides have been optimised for the visitor experience in ways that remove the character that made them worth visiting.
